Review Test: The O.C.

Rating: B-

Age: 15 +

Genre: Romance and Drama

The O.C. is one of those teen shows that you watch once and then you don’t need to watch it again.

It was a gripping decent show that had a good bit of comedy relief between the drama and emotional aspects of the show. However, there were moments in the show that could have been left out due to a lack of creativity and a bit of cliche factors.

The actors and cast were great, you could easily grow a bond with the characters and care about them as if they were family, but, the show lacked the effect of keeping people on the edge of their seat.

The show definitely had its moments of suspenseful action and gripping drama. It toyed with relationships quite a bit and left you wondering what was going to happen with the relationships the show created. That was probably the biggest draw the show held that kept people till the very end, the love triangles and drama among characters. Also, the character of Ryan Atwood in himself was much a mystery that kept the show at a watchable pace.

The show would’ve scored an A-, however, there is a reason in which it was bunked down to B- instead. If you have seen The O.C. you probably know why, the unfortunate death of Marissa Cooper (season 3 episode 25, The Graduates). A main and beloved character that created a vibe in the show that completely left after she was killed off. But hey, a B – is still a passing score for a worthwhile watch on TV!

The O.C.’s Grade

Marissa Cooper’s death is like most main character deaths on shows, depressing and quite damaging to the overall plot and story line of the show. Most people who watched The O.C. probably were watching because of the on-again-off-again relationship between Ryan Atwood and Marissa Cooper, however, the sudden death shook that relationship and honestly felt quite rushed, uncalled for, and completely unnecessary for the show.

If they wanted to keep the show running for a long time after that unforgettable death, they were surely mistaken, because after that episode the show took a drastic turn for the worst. The characters became sloppy, the acting seemed a little off, and the entire vibe and characteristic of the show that was created in the beginning declined. The show was not the same without the character of Marissa Cooper, and far as I’m considered, the show ended after that episode.

The age for this show should be around 15 and up due to the romantic thematic of the show, and the older audience intended themes and story lines.

If you have run out of A + and – shows to watch, I definitely recommend this show just for the sake of seeing it, however, keep in mind that after season 3, the show falls downhill a bit in the character plots and overall story of the show.

Bonus Tip: You can watch The O.C. on Hulu if you have a subscription . . .
